Audio Technica ATH-R50x Open Back Reference Monitor Headphones
Bargain price for audiophile sound
tl;dr Amazing sound for the price, surprisingly lightweight. Hard to beat for exacting, all day listening.
Before we begin, ears are funny things and any review of headphones or earbuds is purely subjective. To cut down on variables I use the same sound sources and test tracks for all my reviews, but what sounds great to me might not sound as good to you.
The Design
For less that $200 Audio Technica don't feel like they have cut any corners in the design and materials of the R50x. These headphones amazed me out the box with just how light they are, at 7.3oz they are comfy for long listening sessions. They might be light but the metal headband and general build quality feels sturdy and reassuring. The style is minimalist, with two small pads supporting the headband, small plastic "A" logos on the center of the grills, and a single push lock cable from the left ear. A thinner wire runs between the left and right ears under the band. In the box you have a storage bag, long and short 3.5mm cables, and a 1/4 inch adapter. They look like a professional tool, which is unsurprising given how good they sound.
The Sound
These are amazing headphones for audiophiles or sound engineers delivering a sound that is beautifully balanced. Audio Technica say that the V shaped curve of their tuning delivers more punch bass and crisp highs even so I was surprised that I didn't spot any lacking in the mid range. Starting at the bottom the bass is strong, but not overwhelming. The mid range response is excellent, with instruments sounding precise, and vocals wonderfully natural. The high end is crisp but not overwhelming and the overall sense of balance can sometimes mean that highs don't sparkle quite as much as may have been expected. For a V curve the mids are the standout feature in my opinion.
The soundstage isn't as grand as you may expect. Don't get me wrong though, it doesn't feel cramped and instead everything in the mix feels grounded as if it is being performed right in front of you. Perfect for enjoying the fine details of a mix. In this regard I would say that what they lack in immersion they make up for in reliable placement and separation.
Conclusion
Great clarity, well balanced sound, and light weight in an open backed frame that is easy to wear wear for prolonged periods. With many headphones to choose from these really stand out as a great deal at this price for professionals and audiophiles alike.
